Now this is a true story for the part
That occurred on the top floor of
Bigwig record office in Nashville, Tennessee
Now understand I'm not any fun or disrespecting anybody
God knows I love country music all my heart and soul
And I the Grand Ole Opry
But I do a problem with someone who
Can't even a D chord on a guitar
Telling with a dream that they won't get far
So this song is dedicated to all underdogs like me
Out there running
Don't get discouraged if you a dream
Don't be afraid to chase it
It's how it

He said, "Son, don't get offended by what I'm to say
I can see you have a
For the you write and play
But you lack what we all commercial appeal
And you just have what it takes
To it here in Nashville"

Well my heart felt like a train
But I a smile on my face
I said, "Thank you for time, sir"
Put my guitar in its case
Our little was like a revelation
Redirecting my
'Cause God knows I'd sell my soul to rock 'n' roll
Or rap or wear those tight skinny

'Cause you know I'd sing my own songs
Than be a on a string
I'll wear I want to wear
I'm sing what I wanna sing
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than the king of

So I loaded up my old truck
And I drove back home to
Got a gig off old 66
At ballroom called The Armadillo
And for the thousand shows or so
Not a soul up
I thought about quitting other day
But I just on kicking that cup

Yeah, I kept kicking that can by
Blood, sweat, and
And wouldn't you I became an overnight sensation
In over ten years
And now I'm packing out all the halls
And the every night
I got a pretty wife, a ranch, a band, a bus, a
I'd say I'm doing

And you I'd rather sing my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
I'll wear I want to wear
I'm sing what I wanna sing
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
Besides I'd be an old fence post in Texas
Than the king of

Oh, how 'bout a little porch picking, boys

Well, wouldn't you know old record man
Showed up one night at honky tonking bar
After my he said,
"Son, I believe you be the next big country star"
He said, "We like how you it raw
We like how you keeping it
And I think you may just have
We all like to call appeal"
Huh, ain't that
Well, sir

I'd rather my own songs
be a puppet on a string
I'll wear what I want to
And I'm gonna sing I wanna sing
knows all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than the king of
God Tennessee
But I'd be just an old fence post in Texas
Than sell my soul to rock 'n'
Or rap or those tight skinny jeans
